Synthol: Miracle French pharmacy product for bug bites

Written by Diane. Posted in France, on life in France

Do mosquitoes feast on you when the weather gets warm? If so, we’re in the same boat.

Over the past couple of months or so, I’ve gotten some of the worst mosquito bites of my life. They swell up, get painful and red, the skin around them gets hard, and then they form a liquid blister that eventually breaks and crusts (the pics below aren’t even the worst ones). Oh, and they itch like mad. This never used to happen, though.

After a visit to the doctor last month and a 10-day course of antibiotics, I was left kind of hopeless as we head into the summer season. I already have a bug net for my bed, but what else could I do? Use Synthol, that’s what. This new-to-me product available at the French pharmacy is a miracle product for bug bites, so if you’re susceptible to all the creepy-crawlies, you’ll want to read on. Maybe it can help you.

Why are the French afraid of air conditioning?

Why are the French afraid of air

Hi everyone! I wrote a post a little while ago asking for guest post submissions for when I’m on vacation in September. First, thank you for all your submissions, and there’s still time if you’d like to submit a pitch.

One pitch I received came from an American expat and it was about mosquito bites and air conditioning. It was perfectly timed because as I read his idea, I laughed out loud. I was sitting on my couch with no fewer than 30 mosquito bites cursing the little bastards that had ruined all chances of sleeping soundly for the next couple of weeks. Since the mosquitoes are out in full force with no A/C in sight around here (meaning we have to open the screenless windows to get air, hence the bugs), I figured I’d run the guest post sooner than later.

And any of you out there who say you hate A/C, you’re LIARS. Listen, it doesn’t have to be Miami-style A/C where it’s so cold you need to wear a sweatshirt indoors, but a comfortable temperature so you can sit on the couch without soaking your clothes is never a bad thing when it’s 90F+ outdoors.

So without further ado, let’s get on with the guest post.

Invasion of the crazy-looking insects

Written by Diane. Posted in on life in France

It’s definitely summer here with temperatures hovering around 80 F, blue skies, perfectly ripe cherries at the market and bugs. Yeah, bugs. But not any old bugs, which I’ve gotten used to. Nope, these GIANT insects that are scary as hell and seemingly come out of nowhere. You see, there are no screens on windows in France so whatever is outside has free reign to walk, er fly, right on in. And twice this week already, one of these kritters has made its way inside…
