French gym culture and an aversion to mirrors

French gym culture and mirrors

French gym culture can teach you loads about the French. While my gym in town isn’t a hip or happening place, it’s still a gym and I enjoy people watching as much as the next gal. But one thing you might notice at my gym (and others I’ve visited in France) is that group fitness classes don’t have mirrors. Or if they do, you’re facing the wall on the other side of the room meaning when you’re working out, you’re not staring at your reflection. I found this really weird because in American gyms, the walls were lined with mirrors. You saw your reflection, it was normal and I liked it.

What gives?

What we can learn from eating like the

If you mention France to someone, one of the first things that will pop into their head will surely be food. Maybe it’s a baguette or croissant or French cheese or just French food in general. France is a country that wholly appreciates mealtime and food, and the longer I live here, the more I see that first hand and appreciate all the good food myself. But what can we learn from eating like the French? A whole lot.

GO!

Where are all the egg whites in France-

Not all countries have the same food products and when you move abroad, discovering all the new foods is part of the fun. But when you get used to something that’s seemingly normal at home and then can’t find it in your new home, it makes you appreciate that item even more when you are able to find it. Except I haven’t been able to find it anywhere. What am I talking about here? Egg whites in France. In the U.S., it’s very common to find a carton of egg whites next to the eggs but in France? Not so. If you want egg whites, you need to crack the egg and separate the egg whites from the yolk.

Why doesn’t France have liquid egg whites in a carton? GO!

When's the best time to join a gym-

Right after graduating college, I worked in sales at an upscale fitness club in New York City. The gym was breathtaking with all the latest and greatest equipment and trendy group fitness classes, amenities in the locker room and beautifully designed spaces throughout. The monthly membership cost also made it out of reach for many of the people who walked in the door wanting to join. Regardless though, my job was to sell memberships and other services to every person who came in looking for info — and I excelled at my job because it was something I really enjoyed (until coworkers started stealing my sales, but that’s another story for another day). I know the ins and outs of joining a gym and how to not get ripped off so…
